The unnamed student made the Snapchat threat Tuesday evening and by 10 p.m. the school had received enough notices to notify the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, Superintendent Valerie Henning-Piedmonte said in a letter to parents.
"We received several messages sent through Anonymous Alerts that a student who was suspended, posted threats directed at the high school using his Snapchat account. Law enforcement was immediately notified and went to his home to conduct a safety check," she wrote. "No weapons were found, but he is now in custody."
Henning-Piedmonte said an extra deputy would be at the school Wednesday to serve as back-up for Deputy Matthew Kraisky, who handles security for the school.
“We are also placing all schools on a lockout, which secures the schools and buildings in response to something that is happening outside. This is not the same as a lockdown. We will re-assess the need for the lockout after we receive an update from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department about the student.”
Administrators in all buildings have been alerted and will work with their school safety teams, she added.
"I want to thank the people who used Anonymous Alerts to notify us," she wrote in a letter to parents. "Without this notice, we would not have been able to act as quickly.
She also thanked the sheriff's office for acting so quickly and looking out the well-being of students and staff.
"Your children’s safety is our priority," she wrote. "They should come to school every day without fear. Deputy Kraisky at Brewster High School, Deputy Suppa at JFK Elementary School, Deputy Simone at HH Wells Middle School and School Patrol Officer Bade at CV Starr Intermediate School will protect the children and staff of Brewster Schools."
